"They contacted me, and told me about this program that they're doing," the singer tells Billboard of the initiative to revitalize community centers to help families in need. "I said 'Sure.' It's a noble endeavor, so it's an easy thing for me to get involved with."
The program is working with Rebuilding Together, which promotes volunteerism and works to improve struggling communities. The non-profit will travel across the country in a specially-equipped truck, delivering grants and recruiting volunteers at each site. For Trace's part, the singer says he is happy to give back.
"I've been blessed," he explains. "I'm one of those fortunate people that my hobby turned into my career. I get to earn my living doing something that I absolutely love to do. It is a career that affords me to have a little time to be able to get involved in some other projects like this. That's not a hard thing to do at all."
Trace continues his Songs & Stories tour this summer, while he also personally helps on one of the renovation projects. His upcoming schedule includes stops in South Carolina, Georgia and Iowa. He will also head to Washington, D.C. over Memorial Day weekend, to perform as part of the "National Memorial Day Concert" on PBS. See a complete list of Trace's tour stops here.
