The show, called "Opening Act," will be produced by "American Idol" producer Nigel Lythgoe, who will scour the web looking for great singers, with help from Mary J. Blige and "Rock Mafia" producer Antonina Armato. The winners of the contest will score a chance to serve as an opening act for established artists, with Jason and Brad listed as two of the singers who will open up their stage to unsigned contestants. Other artists who will also share their concert platform include Rod Stewart, Nicki Minaj, Gym Class Heroes, Jason Mraz and LMFAO.
"There is an extraordinary amount of untapped talent out there," Nigel explains (quote via NY Daily News). "But if you don't know the right people or have the right connections, you may never be discovered. With 'Opening Act,' we are democratizing a notoriously impossible process."
The veteran TV producer adds that the winners will have adequate training before they perform before thousands of fans. "These kids that have never done anything in their lives, never actually performed in front of anybody, have got five days to get themselves ready," he tells E! News. "We've got an artist development team that will help them, but it's going to be very exciting."
In addition to Jason and Brad, Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles will also be participating in a reality TV talent show this summer. The songstress will appear alongside John Legend, Robin Thicke and Kelly Clarkson on ABC's new show, "Duets," which will premiere on May 24 on ABC.
"Opening Act" will debut on July 9 at 10:00 PM ET on E!.
