Joe Nichols, 'Backstory' Preview: Singer Opens Up to GAC About Alcoholism and Abuse

Show Dog-Universal

Joe Nichols has been very open with the media about his struggles with alcohol addiction, but never on such a hugely candid scale. On this Saturday's (May 12) "Backstory," the country star reveals to GAC just how much his life spun out of control before he went to rehab, which was just one month after marrying longtime love, Heather Singleton.

"There's no way that Heather should still be married to me," Joe says of his bride, whom he wed in 2007. "I've done enough that's certainly warranted four or five divorces."

Part of what sparked the singer's battle with the bottle was his tortured past. Joe explains to GAC that he was raised by an abusive father. "He beat the hell out of me," he says of his dad, who passed away in 2002.

Now happy and healthy, having kicked his addictions and subsequent depression, Joe has settled down in Texas with Heather and their brand-new baby girl, Dylan River Nichols, born April 17. (The singer also has 13-year-old daughter Ashelyn from a previous relationship.) Their new daughter's birth comes after yet another huge hurdle Joe and Heather have had to face in their marriage: infertility. The couple open up on "Backstory" about the five miscarriages they suffered before welcoming their healthy and gorgeous Dylan.

GAC shares with The Boot this exclusive clip from the show, which premieres this Saturday at 11:00 PM ET. Click here for additional air times.

@wxfactory.... exactly my point... you knew you couldn't carry, but you still became pregnant after the second "loss of a child" you should have stopped, instead you decided to take a chance and got pregnant THREE MORE TIMES and THREE MORE TIMES BABIES DIED!!

You people who criticize someone who has miscarriages are too stupid to live - how dare you judge - no one is killing babies - they are trying to give life to a baby. I had five miscarriages and I was not killing babies you idiots. I guess you two live in a glass house too right. Ignorance should be obliterated - get a life

anyone ever heard of "feticide".... having miscarriage after miscarriage just to get your way is basically feticide because you know you can't carry a baby, yet you continue to get pregnant. how awful for the poor innocent children who died for you to reach your goal

I love Joe Nichols!! I understand miscarriages happen, but after the second one, the others are just murder! If you know you can't carry a baby, why do women continue to get pregnant.... knowing they will "kill" that baby also?!! So it took FIVE innocent babies to die to get what you wanted... how very selfish!! and for Peg who commented about having had four miscarriages... why??? Congratulations on finally having a child, but were the choices you made (killing babies) worth it?

I'm not being cruel when I say this but here is a perfect example of how medical advancements aren't always best for society. Ever wonder why our older women in our families waited until AFTER their 3rd month to tell the family and close friends they were expecting? Or, why they had to be TWO months late before the doctor would do a test? A gynocologist told me not long ago you could have an accurate test literally in days now. Nature wasn't meant to be this way. He said FAR more miscarriages happen in the first 3 months than women ever knew and most of the time they just thought they were late, never knowing. I saw this first hand several times and it broke the families hearts when at two months a baby was lost or happened numerous times. I've known more than one loose multiple times before having a healthy child. Sometimes nature knows best. I know that sounds cruel, but true. Too many things happen in the first 3 months and it's just too painful for families. But of course, 50 years ago we also had things like modesty, privacy, and being respectful especially when it comes to being pregnant. Words today that have no meaning and people have no clue how badly the loss of these concepts have hurt society. Everyone assumes the modern world is always better and their beliefs were old fashion, silly and stupid. I've learned they OFTEN had very good reasons for the way they did things. Maybe I'm lucky, I spent MANY hours with my GREAT-grandparents and learned things others that don't have this privilage can't see. But remember, faster is always better, newer isn't always better.
