Billboard Music Awards: Taylor Swift Named 'Woman of the Year'

Jon Kopaloff, FilmMagic

Country music was well represented at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards Sunday night (May 20) in Los Angeles, with Taylor Swift taking home the huge honor of Woman of the Year.

"The first time I ever saw my song on the Billboard charts, I was 16 and I was on a radio tour ... in a rental car, going to three or four different stations a day and homeschooling in the back seat," Taylor called upon accepting the award. "That seems like forever ago, thanks to so many people -- but mostly my family, everyone who's helped me get here and the fans. I just love you so much! I'm so humbled and honored."

Other country winners included Lady Antebellum for Top Country Group and Jason Aldean for Country Album of the Year (My Kinda Party) and Country Song of the Year ("Dirt Road Anthem"). Overall, Adele dominated the 2012 Billboard Music Awards with 12 wins. See the nominees and winners' list below, along with a gallery of some head-turning fashion at the show.

The ceasless cacaphony of 'true' country purists is getting old in regard to Taylor. She totally earned the Woman of the Year by having the biggest tour, most downloads, near-biggest CD sales and most impact on the industry, all with her own songs as opposed to being a cypher for others' work. She easily conqured the country genre with her first album full of songs written between the ages of fourteen and sixteen, so consider that folks. If all you want is trucks-beer-bootie grinding-with some state's name thrown in, I suggest you expand your horizions and vocabulary. I also suggest you listen to a song on her first album, 'A Place in This World,' where she tells you exactly what she's doing and where she's going from the age of sixteen. She's evolving faster than your lazy eyes can focus, and the best example of female goodness and power through love for the upcoming generations. Could be WAY worse...

Why was Taylor honored at the Billboard Awards live for this award is my question? She isn't even the first recipient of the award. The very first Billboard Woman of the Year went to Reba, then to beyonce, then to Fergie, and now to Taylor Swift. Why weren't any of these 3 other ladies recognized live at the Billboard Awards? It would've been nice to see all of them recognized for their achievements, especially Reba.

Jason was the big winner last night, not taylor. She was announced the women of the year in the fall, it was no surprise. She won nothing! Jason won album and song. His picture should be up not hers. I find it kind of funny all the hype around her speak now album and she hasn't really won anything, keeps loosing to real country artists like Jason and Lady A. Congrats to the real winners, jason, Lady and Adele!
