Carrie Underwood Gay Marriage Controversy: Singer Avoiding Online Commentary

Jon Kopaloff, FilmMagic

LONDON (AP) - Carrie Underwood is all about the music, not politics.

Yet the 29-year-old country music star has found herself in a media storm after voicing support for gay marriage.

In an interview with British newspaper The Independent, Underwood, who is married, was quoted as saying she believes everyone should have the right to love. She also noted that her church was gay-friendly and it wasn't her job to judge people.

Underwood's comments created a backlash online from those angry with her stance.

Speaking in London, Underwood was uncomfortable revisiting the subject and said she was staying away from reading the reactions.

"I was asked a difficult question in the last five minutes of an interview and I answered it the best way I knew how, and after that I do what I do and I love making music and I generally try to stay out of any kind of controversy," she told The Associated Press in an interview Tuesday.

That said, Underwood is a former "American Idol" and Grammy winner who knows what she says will be heard.

"The role-model word is really scary to me, because no matter what happens in your life, something you do, wear, say, sing, whatever - somebody somewhere is probably not going to like it too well," she said. "I just really try hard to do what I do and try to be nice to people and make great music and if people think they can look up to that, that's wonderful. If not, that's OK too."

The American star is in the U.K. to win over English hearts with her music. Her latest album, "Blown Away," is her first actual British release. She's also playing a sold-out show Thursday at London's Royal Albert Hall that will feature her latest material as well as older hits like "Before He Cheats."

She's promising a laid-back show, compared to past American gigs which had flying pick-up trucks on the stage.

The Oklahoma-born star has been to London before but just on a tourist trip to see the sights.

"I didn't sign autographs or anything then, nobody was coming to hear me sing, this is a definite difference this time round," she said.

Underwood hopes breaking into the U.K. market will in some way rebalance the flood of successful English acts like Adele, One Direction and The Wanted who are taking over the American charts.

"We're kind of being invaded right now, in the U.S, in a good way," she said. "I do think it would be really cool if I were loved and accepted here, that's the hope for this week."

Underwood stands TOATLLYagainst God's Word:
God's Word 100% clearly says Homosexuality [and Lesbianism]
is sin and Homosexuals [and Lesbians] will not go to Heaven
...they will go to Hell. 1 Cor.6:9,10.
God's Word calls homosexuality degrading of the body, shameful,
indecent and perversion!! Romans 1:24-32,

"Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves
up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example
of those who suffer the punishment of Eternal Fire." Jude 7.
The sin of Sodom and Gomorrah was homosexuality!
So according to God Homosexuals are going to suffer the punishment
of Eternal Fire!!!!! Ouch! [bring a lot of suntan lotion! Ha!].

Jesus spoke against homosexuality. He condemned "sexual
immorality" in Mk.7:21-23. This word means all sex outside of marriage:
Adultery, incest, animal sex, LESBIANISM and HOMOSEXUALITY.
This word sexual immorality also means, "to prostitute one's body to
the lust of another." Jesus says sexual immorality makes a man "unclean,
defiled and polluted." Mk. 7:23

I have never really been a Carrie fan, but she gained a lot of respect from me by putting her neck on the line and expressing her views on such a contentious subject. It would have been easy for her to hedge or avoid the question, and it would have been even easier to let herself get sucked into the hate and intolerance of the anti-gay crowd, especially being from rural Oklahoma and performing in country music.

Carrie, good job, I'm proud of you.

LOVE you Carrie you are true to your heart. Keep making the music, don't let the media or crazies push you around. Famous or not famous you have an opinion. People that don't like it can roll in pig slop.

i'm so happy that people have nothing better to do but"quote" passages and sit up "high" on a mountain and talk trash about someone's life or lifestyle. remember when harry belafonte was"mulotto" because being black and desirable by white women was taboo? life is what it is, in spite of what anyone may think, believe, or try to beat into your head. we are all people who have diverse ideas on life ,love and happiness. what is good for one is not always good for another. if someone can find what makes they're clock tick who cares, don't quote passages, had enough with the televangelist s, bakers,, swaggarts, who get caught with they're pants down and claim remorse for they're actions. its laughable they weren't quoting nothing when they were getting some were they? or taking your money from you, all in gods name. just diverting a little for themselves, the dog, and shoes. i was married for 32 years to a wonderful woman until lung cancer took her away last october. so, don't quote stuff, live life how you as an individual want to. ain't nothin gonna save you or loved ones in the end. thats the brutal truth of life, LIVE IT, LOVE IT, EMBRACE IT AND ALL YOU HOLD DEAR IN THIS WORLD. AT THE END OF THE DAY NOTHING CAN SAVE YOU FROM THE INEVITABLE.. BELIEVE WHAT YOU WANT TO BELIEVE, BUT DON'T TRY TO SHOVE IT DOWN EVERYONE'S THROAT. I'VE GOT NO TIME OR PLACE FOR THINGS THAT DON'T CONCERN ME. I LIVE MY LIFE FOR ME ,MY FAMILY AND MY CLOSE FRIENDS. PERIOD NO ONE ELSE.

The question I pose is how can a gay married couple change ANYTHING about a married, straight couple? It would not or does not, as far as I can see it. I also wish nothing but the best for all human beings. Mrs. Underwood was just answering a question with honestly. Is honesty always the best policy?

why did the interviewer even ask her that question .....how nasty can they get.....ppl. dont necessarily need to know everyones opinion on a topic. And since she is of the music industry.....shame on the person that asked. Next time do you want to ask her say when was the last time she passed gas..? I say leave her alone to do what she does wonderfully ...... sing.

I totally agree with you Carrie. And all you "Christians" that accuse others of not following the Bible...how many times a DAY do you do or say something that the Bible speaks against?! Unbelievable the amount of Judges out there who turn others from the real Jesus. Again, it is not up to us, thank goodness!

Good for her, you dont have to be gay to support the gay community.. Let those that bash her, answer for their own issues with it.... But leave her alone....
