Scotty McCreery Plans for 'Intense' Few Years

Glenn Pinkerton, AP

Scotty McCreery's future looks bright ... and busy! The 18-year-old plans on juggling college courses this fall with touring with Brad Paisley on the Virtual Reality tour, as well as recording his sophomore album. He chalks his crazy calendar up to just paying his dues.

"This what I want to do for the rest of my life," Scotty tells Billboard. "You've got to put in the work early to be able to do that for the next few years down the road. It's pretty intense. It's getting to be ... I don't want to say a job, but it's getting to be like that. I'm taking it seriously. But I love it."

The North Carolina native rose to fame by winning the tenth season of "American Idol" last year, but he says even without the hit TV talent show, he would still be working just as hard. "I never wanted to sit behind a desk; that wasn't me," explains the former grocery store clerk. "I love entertaining. If I wasn't on ['American Idol'] I would've tried to head to Nashville and make it the traditional way."

The recent high school graduate saw his debut album, Clear as Day, soar to the top of the charts and earn platinum status, but his thoughts are already on the new set of tunes. "We've [started] to get in the mode of writing and stuff," he notes. "We've already got a few winners picked out ... I like the process of making an album. The first one I did was a little rushed; I didn't get to enjoy it or get creative with it. This one we're going to take our time and really make a good album."

One thing the "Water Tower Town" singer hopes to offer with the upcoming CD is a more personal glimpse into his own life. "I just want people to really see me this time," he explains. "I don't want to get caught up in the sappy love songs; those are important, but I want them to get a feel for who I am as an artist and sing about real things in life. Hopefully we'll get that with the songs and have some fun with it as well."

The Virtual Reality tour has upcoming shows in New York, New Jersey and Wyoming. See a complete list of concert dates here.

Renegotiate your contract to have all marketing expenses and recording costs allocated against the writer, and not the recording artist. It is only fair, as the writer stands to benefit more than you if a song sells on radio.

Also make sure you get 50% publishing rights, or move on - don't make others rich off of your hard work- your voice is gold to them, and negotiate hard - they will buckle in the end...

Your voice sells- make sure you are getting compensated with guarantees and a share of all writers rights on every recording that you put out in the marketplace.

If they do not give you a 50% writer's rights, move on to another writer. Lots of songs are good - don't become an annuity for writers, at your own expense!

Good Luck! Remembr, Nashville is for songwriters and publishers, and they like to prostitute a good voice to sell their songs - you need to get writer's royalties and rights on every song you record, or else have the writer pay for all recording costs and marketing costs... it is the right way to do business.

I like the comments that you gave, they are spot on. I read a article that was sooo sad. Whitney Houston died and the "bulk" of all her money doesn't even go to her daugther or her estate. it goes to the record company and clive davis. now I'm not hating on them because they want to want to make money but they ***** out artists and make money off of them, years (decades) after they are no longer performing. I remember when everyone scoffed at Prince for fighting to own all of his music and publishing rights 100% and people thought he was a nut-job. But now artist understand the importance of owning what you put out, and I commend him for showing fellow artist how it should be done. He can now make music on his own terms and not feel raped if he puts out a mega-hit song and gets next to nothing from it. Kudos to prince. he put out purple rain over twenty years ago and yet, the record company is "still" making more money off of it than he will ever see. We have moved into a digital age, were music is managed like data; you must make sure that you control that data and make sure that you get the biggest slice of any pie that is cut. I'm not saying that companys shouldn't make money, they just shouldn't make more that you, because without you (the artist) they have nothing.
