"The surprise track was a duet -- and he recorded the duet with Carrie Underwood," confirms Mike Mullaney, Music Director of Boston radio station Mix 104.1. "People should think back to the one that Bon Jovi did with Jennifer Nettles from Sugarland ("Who Says You Can't Go Home") -- that kind of vibe. Obviously he's fresh off 'Idol' and he knows the power of Carrie Underwood. At first, the rest of the band didn't want to put it on there but their label convinced them, 'Guys, this will get you airplay in red states.' So that was that."
The former "American Idol" champion and former "Idol" judge (who recently announced his departure from the show after two seasons), first performed together at the 2011 ACM Awards, which was followed by a special CMT Crossroads taping, in conjunction with the Super Bowl XLVI.
Carrie isn't the only country singer, nor the only former contestant of the reality TV talent show, to appear on the rock band's new album. Lauren Alaina revealed earlier this year that she had lent her vocals to the upcoming project, as well.
"Yesterday: returned to idol & then went to the studio to record background vocals for the new Aerosmith record," she tweeted in March. "#ISTHISREAL? Thank u Steven!"
Carrie will kick off the North American leg of her Blown Away tour on September 14 in Manchester, N.H., with Hunter Hayes serving as her opening act. See her complete list of tour dates here.
