"Voice in bad shape ... Needing a miracle," the singer tweeted only a few hours before the show. "Gonna go as long as I can tonight! Scary situation for any singer when the sound won't come ... Say a prayer for my chords!"
Later, he shared the disappointing news with his more than 76,000 followers. "In four years of touring, I've never canceled day of show!" he posted. "My voice doctor has ordered me not to sing tonight. I'm heartbroken!"
The Missouri native continued to tweet his heartbreak throughout the evening. "Still feel horrible about canceling!" he tweeted a few hours later. "Looks like I'm getting a shot in the neck tomorrow morning ... That should be fun!"
The "The Sound of a Million Dreams" singer visited a doctor in Chicago the next day, who gave him treatment needed to get through his concert that evening in the Windy City. David is now back on vocal rest until Thursday, when his tour resumes in Carbondale, Illinois. The singer-songwriter has several shows left on his intimate fall trek, which he says is bringing him closer to his fans.
"As awesome as it is to be with a big act and get three catered meals a day and get a dressing room with an actual shower in it, it's hard sometimes as a new artist to come across in 25 minutes," he tells The Boot. "You get 25 minutes to hopefully impress these people. I think the longer set is more suitable for us and gives us an opportunity to connect better."
