"I'm curious about those things, but I don't get involved with it on a daily basis either," he told The Boot and other reporters at a recent media event. "Obviously when the record's coming out, I'm going to want to know how it's doing, but I'm not going to call every day and check, 'How many did we sell today?' It's not that sort of thing."
Jason, who adds that he hasn't even called his record company in four years, knows his reign on the charts might be short-lived, thanks to the release of Taylor Swift's Red album earlier this week. But, the 35-year-old says he actually welcomes the friendly rivalry.
"I think when you have a record coming out, the thing you don't want to happen is your record come out the same day as somebody like that," Jason says. "I think you piggyback off each other in situations like that. I don't know if it's something you necessarily plan out that way. It's the time of year where a bunch of records are going to come out -- the holiday season. Everyone wants to put records out, hoping that everybody's going to go buy them as a stocking stuffer. It's a great time to put records out, but if you can keep driving country music fans where they keep going to the store to buy new records and yours is staring them in the face, you're going to have a better chance of getting them to buy one. I'm sure that goes into the thought process of managers and record companies."
Ironically, Jason's 2010 album My Kinda Party was released on November 2, 2010, only one week after Taylor's Speak Now CD -- a fact that prompted a little good-natured ribbing from the singer. "I tried to ride her coattails the first time around, and maybe she's trying to ride my coattails this time," he joked. "I really doubt that, though."
Jason will wrap up his My Kinda Party tour this Saturday (October 27) in Dallas with his annual Concert for the Cure. He will then head to Nashville for the CMA Awards, where he is nominated for three trophies, including Entertainer of the Year. The 46th Annual CMA Awards will air live, Nov. 1 at 8:00 PM ET on ABC.
