Singers We Lost Too Soon: The Most Shocking Deaths in Country Music

Michael Ochs Archives

Country music often deals with the darker side of existence, but when death, especially for a well-known personality, comes unexpectedly, the songs that remind us of those artists take on an even greater poignancy. Chief among the thieves of our most beloved entertainers are the various forms of substance abuse and the need for -- and modes of -- frequent travel. No generation of country musician or country fan seems immune from the sad circumstances that tear us away from the stars we admire. But sometimes in death, the stars burn even brighter than they did in life.

The Boot remembers some of the most shocking deaths in country music in the photo gallery below, along with the sad stories behind the days the music died.

I remember as a 6 year old kid, going with my Mom to the crash site where Patsy Cline was killed. At the time, it was along side a gravel road.
It appeared they may have been trying to land the plane on the road? My Uncle told me before he passed he saw a plane flying in circles before dark the day before, he thinks it was them?
I remember things to this day about the site, some would not be right to mention...I do remember the plane parts were yellow and green.
She is special to me, I had no interest in music as a kid, until I heard one of her songs played on an outside intercom at a dairy bar type restaurant.

BTW: "The Boot Staff" should be ashamed of themselves for forgetting about Doc Watson in their pictorial of legends lost in 2012.

But I guess things like that can happen when "journalists" with little knowledge of music history get behind the pen.

If 'The Boot Staff' wants to get real on the subject of legends ...they might want to brainstorm on an article about how Nashville and "country" music radio abandon those legends who still have/had the pipes but are put out to pasture by media and CEO's. Think about all the years we lost, but could have had, had those in power not blacklisted the likes of Haggard, Jones, Connie Smith, etc.

Hypocrisy is alive and well in Gnashville.
