Gary Allan Disappointed by 'Whitewashed' Country Music

As a die-hard country music fan, Gary Allan admits he's disappointed with the way so many of his peers have crossed over into the pop world.

"I personally think it's a bad thing for all genres," the country star told The Boot and other reporters at a recent media event. "The result is now you have to leave it on the country radio station for a few minutes to even decide if it is a country radio station. You never, ever had to do that. Back in the day we were all playing for [the country] genre. You didn't have to worry about being so politically correct ... there was a lot more variety. There was a lot more passion. Now it sort of has to be right down the middle so it doesn't offend, and I think the result is that it's all being whitewashed. "

The singer feels many artists today are more worried about commercial appeal than making great music. "I think the real problem is that nobody buys albums anymore, so you don't get the depth of the artists that are out today," he notes. "What you get is whatever they felt is politically correct to get on there and actually make some impact. I think that's where you're losing your depth. You're only getting the very top of everything. It really bothers me."

Still, Gary has high hopes for the genre that has embraced him for the past 17 years. "To me, country music's about life," he explains. "It's about Monday through Friday. It's the blue-collar, 40-hour week, songs about life. It used to have more of a sound, but I think the heart of that's still the same. It's still American music. I think I'm still writing more of that. I try to write relevant songs about life and whatever I'm going through and whatever people are going through. I think it's always going to have that. I'm upset with the way things shake out, but it's still at the core my favorite style of music by a long shot, mostly because of the writers. We have such a unique thing in Nashville."

Gary will be on tour throughout the rest of 2012, but don't expect him to fill his set list with songs from his upcoming CD. "I try not to play too many songs that people don't know," he says. "It really pisses me off when I go see somebody that's been around a long time and they don't play any of their old stuff. I'm always very conscious of that. Nothing pisses you off more than when they play the whole new album for you."

Gary's new album, Set You Free, will be released early next year. Keep track of his upcoming concert schedule here.

I'm a fan of Gary's, but he shouldn't be talking; his music is rock with a dash of country music thrown in. Every artist thinks he/she is the only one who is 'real' or 'hardcore'. Give it a rest.

If you see Gary Allan in concert, all he wants to be is a hard rock singer. But so many of his hits are nice slow songs....I believe he is a tortured artist.

While I respect your opinion Miss Rozie, I have to disagree with you. His music is not white washed and I believe he is writing, recording, and releasing the music he wants to hear on the radio. There is nothing pop about him and if you listen to his albums as a whole you will hear different sides of him. Due to politics and all that crap you will never hear many of his songs on "country" radio. It's unfortunate since he has probably the most unique voice in country music and lives what he's selling. I get what you're saying about dark....but you also read where he said he records what he's going through and he's been to hell and back. As a survivor of a similar situation I have his music over the last 8 years to be very healing each step of the way. It's way beyond the music its self and about the lyrics with him and I can really relate. I have long felt that Gary is the most underrated artist in country music and believe he will be one of the guys who is around playing like Willie, Cash, and so many of our old time renegades.

I fully agree with Gary - however, alot of his music really isn't any better. He tends to record music that is dark. I'm looking for Gary to release some music that possibly has a shuffle beat or something upbeat & fun! I am truly NOT bashing him, he started this conversation rolling. I love Gary's voice & some of what I hear out of him but a lot of his music makes me want to just go to sleep .... maybe Gary should start recording & releasing the kind of country music HE wants to hear on the radio. While there is some okay music on FM radio, most of what they play I don't want to hear. And like an idiot I will watch the CMA's tonight & will come away extremely disappointed. I rarely ever turn on my local "country music" station here in Chicago - the music is TOO loud to listen - no thanks! I listen to Willie's Place on XM/Sirius or Eddie Stubbs on WSM/Nashville for the country music I want to hear. I have said for a long time, rock music is dead & Nashville is shoving the music these artists are having to record to be ON radio down our throats for the almighty buck! I don't see that changing any time too soon. And as you can see, I am not that politically correct to have not made my opinion be known ..... Note to Gary: The only two albums I have bought in the last year are by Marty Stuart ..... just sayin' .....

Miss Rozie, In the beginning of your post you state that you want to hear something with a shuffle beat or upbeat and fun. Yet at the end, you say the station you listen to in Chicago is too loud. So which is it? It sounds like you are very hard to please. If you appreciate country music at it's finest--such as Gary's--you will see that it isn't always about a beat or being fun. Country music is about life. It's about the real world. Reality doesn't always reflect the "up" side of life. Gary's voice allows the listener to hear the emotions in the music. Mindy is right. If you want a true reflection of Gary, you should hike over to Spotify and check out ALL of his music instead of what is played on the radio. Gary doesn't do politics, which is what many people admire about him. Therefore, you may not get to hear the best tracks off an album. While I can agree that I love Marty Stuart, I must disagree with you about Gary Allan. He is truly genuine in his love of country music--he doesn't just record for the hell of it--he lives it.
