Taylor Swift, 'Begin Again' Is Genre-Defying, Emotional Hit

"Begin Again" is arguably the most country radio-friendly track on Taylor Swift's platinum-selling Red album, and just like its chart-topping predecessor, "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," the ballad is being played on both country and pop stations. The genre-bending superstar says she didn't necessarily set out to make any song on Red country or pop, but rather her focus was on showing growth as a musician.

"It's definitely something that I find myself trying to balance, because I am influenced by so many different types of music," Taylor told The Boot when we asked if she finds it daunting to have to please both country and pop fans. "Everyone is different about whether they like to think of genres as something that defines an artist, or if it's just kind of a category to put music into. For me, genres are a way for people to easily categorize music, but it doesn't have to define you. It doesn't have to limit you. It doesn't have to make up this imaginary rule book of, 'You can only use these instruments, and you can only use this kind of song structure, and you can't go anywhere near loops or big drum sounds.' I just love the idea of getting to paint with lots of different colors, musically. I love that the fans have followed me down that road and I really appreciate the open-mindedness of them."

"Begin Again" hit the Top 10 on Billboard's country singles charts and has been downloaded more than 727,000 times, according to Nielsen SoundScan data. Taylor is thrilled by its success.

"It's a really emotional, vulnerable song," she says, "so for people to want to play it on the radio and for people to request it on the radio, it means a lot to me because it came from a really personal place."

The song tells the story of a girl who is pleasantly surprised by a new guy who does everything right that her ex did wrong. Taylor explains that the inspiration for "Begin Again" was from both a sad time in her romantic life and from "a place of hope and the idea that even after you go through a really devastating ending of a relationship, it can start all over."

She can't keep a relationship going because she is so in love with herself and what guy wants a song written about them every time a relationship doesn't work out. I do not find her "beautiful " sexy or smart. She is going to ruin her career and she asked for it..what a "yuck"

She needs to write songs for someone else to sing. Someone who can sing.

She also needs to record something different..................preferably not about a guy. The most talented songwriters in the world are right there at her fingertips in Nashville. Why can't she do something different and record someone else's song? Because she's greedy!

How is she being greedy? She's not telling people or forcing people to buy her records? People do what they know and she good at writing her own songs, she plays her own instruments and was supported by her mom and dad. People seem to like her songs because they buy them and she has won many awards about them.

Articulate, creative, evolutionary and brilliant...this is why I adore Taylor. As Scott Borchetta said, (president of Big Machine Records who she made a millionaire) If she hadn't been so young and cute people would have recognized a genius a long time ago. From the fourteen year old girl who was Nashville's youngest contract songwriter to the world's biggest superstar nine years later, people can gab and titter about her eyes, her relationships and her friends, but Taylor just goes farther and sets new records every time you turn around. Her songs stick with millions like glue, and she's become an amazing woman without swearing, drugging, drinking or throwing fits from her fame. Could be worse. In fact, almost every other girl who ever got so famous so fast is, and she did it on her own intellect and creative chops. Don't be surprised when she writes a best selling novel, directs an Oscar winning movie or gets elected to higher office in the future. She's got a lot more growing to do.

I think she's terrific..she shares her talents and is there for the "little" guy. Hope she has a successful and happy relationship in the near future. She doesn't write about booze and drugs because that's not what she does. Country singers/writers write and sing about what's closest to them, right?
