Toby Keith's Bass Player Dies: Singer Mourns Sudden Loss of Bandmate and Friend

Carl 'Chuck' Goff, Jr., Toby Keith's bass player for the past 25 years, passed away after a car crash in Oklahoma on Feb. 27. He was 54 years old.

"We are deeply saddened by the sudden death of our band member, Chuck Goff," Keith said in a statement on his website. "He was a close friend for over 25 years, the band leader and bass player. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family."

Goff is credited for writing two of Keith's hits, "You Ain't Much Fun" and "Upstairs Downtown." He created a signature bass through Dean Guitars.

In 2010, Keith told The Boot that Goff was one of the funniest guys he knew.

"You can call him any time and get a laugh," he said. "He ought to have his own radio show. He's funny!"

Contact Music reports that police are still investigating the two-car collision.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, and Toby Keith, this accident happened in front of our house. I am so sorry for all involved. The accident did not happen in OKC but east of Noble, at 96th and Cemetery rd. This is a rural area.

I have met Toby and some of his band members at his concert and I have to say they are some of the nicest people. My thoughts and prayers go out to Chuck's family, friends and bandmates. He will be greatly missed!!
