Michael Ochs Archives
Hailed as one of the best country singers of his generation, Keith Whitley's years as a hitmaker were relatively few, but his influence on today's crop of young traditionalists is immeasurable. In 1988, a string of five No. 1 country hits began with "Don't Close Your Eyes." "When You Say Nothing at All" and "I'm No Stranger to the Rain" followed but by May 1989, the husband of singer Lorrie Morgan succumbed to acute alcohol poisoning at 33 years old.
