His velvety smooth vocal delivery made the crooner a worldwide superstar, gaining Jim Reeves a fan base in such unlikely places as India, Norway and South Africa. His countrypolitan style, guided by producer Chet Atkins, made him one of the most successful purveyors of the "Nashville Sound," with hits such as "He'll Have to Go," and "Four Walls." In July 1964, the 40-year-old was killed when the plane he was piloting just outside Nashville flew into a violent storm.
