In 1965, Johnny Cash was arrested in El Paso, Texas, suspected of attempting to smuggle heroin into Mexico (he was actually in possession of prescription drugs in excess of a combination of 1,000 capsules and tablets and was given a suspended sentence. That same year a truck fire that caused a California forest fire and an incident during which he was arrested for picking wildflowers in Starkville, Miss., added to the Cash mystique.
